Beverage Export: Key Steps Before International Shipment

What to prepare before exporting beverages

Before production, the importer should define the target market and the standards that apply to the product. This is the basis for choosing the right formula, packaging and documents.

Standards and certifications

ISO 22000 and HACCP are key standards in food-safety management and control.

Depending on the market, a product may need to meet additional requirements. HALAL is essential in many Muslim markets, while exporting to the United States requires compliance with FDA-related regulations.

Packaging and labelling

Export packaging must protect the product during transport and meet the labelling rules of the destination market. Information such as ingredients, volume, nutrition facts, expiry date, batch code and origin should be checked before printing.

Export documents

Depending on the product and market, the document set may include the Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin (C/O), Health Certificate and Bill of Lading. Documents must be accurate and consistent for smooth customs clearance.

VIC's beverage OEM process

VIC's beverage OEM process, from product development to delivery

VIC runs an 8-step OEM process, from idea to finished product and delivery:

  1. 1 Receiving the brief: defining needs, target market and product requirements
  2. 2 Research and development: finalising the formula and testing the product
  3. 3 Sample approval: sending samples for the partner to evaluate and confirm
  4. 4 Production: manufacturing on modern lines to the agreed standards
  5. 5 Quality control: controlling quality before completion
  6. 6 Design and printing: finalising packaging to the brand identity
  7. 7 Packing and finishing: packing, labelling and preparing for shipment
  8. 8 Delivery: completing the order and delivering to the partner as planned

MOQ, FOB pricing and shipping plan

MOQ (minimum order quantity) for beverages is usually calculated by container. Setting the MOQ early helps the importer plan budget, inventory and logistics.

FOB (Free On Board) is a common delivery term in which the seller is responsible for loading the goods onto the vessel at the port of export. From the FOB price, the importer can calculate the total landed cost to its market.

Each market, its own requirements

Requirements for the product, labelling and documents can vary by country:

  1. 1 Middle East: strong HALAL requirements and labelling per local regulations
  2. 2 United States: compliance with FDA-related regulations and labelling
  3. 3 Europe: specific rules on ingredients, additives and nutrition information
  4. 4 Asia: each country may apply different rules to imported beverages

Defining the target market from the start helps develop a suitable product and limit later changes.
